A response to the Chief Government Spokesman

28|01|2006 |Maldives Politics  | via e-mail

The Chief Government Spokesman, Mohamed Hussain Shareef has said that Tuesday's failed street demonstration organized by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) was an overwhelming public vote of confidence for President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's sweeping agenda for democracy, human rights and reform.

I just don't understand in what way he is trying to interpret the gathering. It was not a street demonstration; it was a peaceful call, a call for justice. The public support for the demonstration was small not because they support the so-called Gayoom's sweeping agenda for democracy, human rights and reform. It was because of the treats government made, the media propaganda.

I feel more threatened by the government media then from any opposition party; I believe that more and more people are now getting aware of their rights, what the government has been hiding for years. Today I don't feel that Maldives is ruled by a government, but its more like an underworld gang, mafia rule, drug loads. Oh god when will we see the light of true humanity in this nation.

The government sponsored websites and media calls the opposition as a group of Christians, infidels... but what about the government does it protect the religion they preach? ? Not at all.

When a person says something against the president, or stands against him there are rules arrest him, points to prove him as a terrorist. but what about the street gangs, the real danger for each and every common man, just check out the complain register at the police station and you will see how many cases or theft, looting, sexual abuse... are reported each day, attempt of murder cases have become so common, but the culprit is never kept under arrest for more than a few days... where is the constitution when these crimes are done?? Where is the law?? Where is justice?

A letter to the Education Minister

21|01|2006 |Fathimath Ali | via e-mail

Hon Ms Zahiya Zareer

Minister of Education

Hon Minister,

We believe that you are trying your best to promote schools in various fields and that we would like to comment on an unmotivated area which is really important for both parents and children and that is school health.

If you look at a Health Assistant at a school, the basic salary is less than a salary given to a Junior Assistant Nurse at IGM Hospital whereas both hold the same certificate and trainings. The work-load of a School Health Assistant would definitely be harder as she will be the only one to attend on all the students and school events and so on. The starting salary of a Junior Assistant Nurse is MRF 2315 and we understand that a Health Assistant gets less than that which would indeed make one unmotivated or poor in job performance which would directly affect our beloved children.

So, please review this and try to promote this important service provided by the schools.

Yours truly,

Fathimath Ali

A very poor shot at an exclusive opportunity

Voice against Dhi-Politics is ever understandable as they show a blind eye to the events in Maldives and its people. The questions posed to government spokesmen shows clearly that Dhi-Politics is one-sided. It shows low journalistic qualities and the common articles of Dhi-politics which goes pro-governmental. The questions were asked with a tone of attacking Ibrahim Ismail to which the spokesmen was glad to say yes.

Even with such positive questions asked the spokesman failed not to act as a fool. Government spokesmen said : "The Government has a responsibility to the people to deliver on our promises for democratic reform, and we intend to do this with or without the political parties." It seems our spokesmen forgot that the "political parties" are one of the most important elements of the reform agenda and one most important agenda promised by Maumoon in his reform agenda.

This shows how dictator works. Even though "political parties" are essential for reform when this element threatens their power they would deny political party break the law and omit pieces of reform agenda.

I am writing this in hope of reform to Dhi-Politics and I hope they have the courage to publish this on their site. While thousands of Maldivians are waiting for loans and money by other means to find a roof over their head dhi-politics forgot to ask the spokesman about the loans that were un-paid by lots of government officials which was exposed recently. Why Adam Zahir the police chief haven't been brought to justice for not paying a single cent of 8 million rf loan he took from state fund.

Why did not Dhi-Politics ask the spokesman why Mohamed Nasheed(Anni) is still in house arrest while the people who threw petrol bombs and stones are free?

Why did not dhi-politics ask the spokesman why there is a swimming pool instead of a harbor in Fares-mathoda for 8 years?

Why did not dhi-politics ask why peaceful assembly a constitutional right is being undermined.

Or why didn't simply ask what the spokesman's comment would be on the MDP's claim that it has over 42,000 members? A one third of vote

There are so many questions that could've been asked without just going on saying. [ dhi-politics : do you think Ibrahim Ismail is an idiot.? Spokesman: Yes he is look at this and that. ]

Listen to the people and voice the people's voice. Not individuals who say a ruler who ruled 27 years is not out-dated.

Extra note : Maybe Dhi-politics team should visit Maldives and see the support MDP has got and the democratic frame work it works on.
