The
Republic of Maldives or Dhivehi Rajje’ is a nation consisted
of an archipelago, located in the Indian Ocean.
Although,
the written history of the Maldive Islands indicates the
existence of different religious beliefs in the Maldives, she
has embraced Islam in 1153 AD and since then Maldivian people
did not commit apostasy.
Dhivehi
is the national language, officially recognized as their
mother tongue, and is written and spoken by the Maldivian
people regardless of its varied dialects. Both the English and
Arabic languages are used as mediums of instruction in
schools.
The
Maldives was a British protectorate from 1667 to 1965, and in
the same year, she became a member of United Nations. Since
then, Maldives was governed by sultanate until the Republic
was replaced in 1953.The First Republic was declared by
Mohammad Amin Didi, but his presidency however, was short
lived. Consequently, a Constitutional Monarchy was
reestablished with Sultan Mohammad Farid on the throne. This
monarchy was later again abolished on 11th of
November 1968, and Ibrahim Nasir was the president of the
second republic.
Ibrahim
Nasir’s presidency also had lived a life of its own, and was
succeeded by Maumoon Addul Gayoom who was elected and sworn in
as president of the Maldives on November 11, 1978, and until
today, President Gayoom is the president of the Maldives who
is presently serving the sixth five years-term in office of
the President.
