EU’s attempt to impose economic restriction on Maldives is based on unobserved and unjust grounds

28/03/2005-Few months back, EU defined the inflow of the Maldives tourism industry as ‘non-humanitarian aid’ which to the ears may sound as the inflow of the tourism business in the Maldives involves business irregularities and hence is a dangerous mechanism installed against the rights of the people. But this is simply a misconception.

If the tourism industry of the Maldives is EU’s target to be demolished, it is a deliberate attempt to abuse Human Rights. This is for the occasion that many Maldivians have based their lives on the income they earn from the healthiest business industry; the exotic tourist business in the Maldives, and they are full dependents of the inflow of this sector. Although this reality remains crystal clear, EU has attempted to make the dependents of tourism industry in the Maldives struggle and die of starvation. EU’s tireless move to destroy Maldives economy, to the humanitarian eyes may look outrageous, and it would not be unjust to describe its move as an insane attempt to abuse Human Rights, and a clear sign of EU’s failure to inspect the current situation in the Maldives and reaching to the reality of the status quo.

EU’s recent resolution that called on to boycott Maldives tourism was based on achieving some self-centered objectives, hence it demands to repeal the state of emergency that president Gayoom has announced due to the upheavals occurred last August, and to force the government of Maldives to release the detained leaders of violence on 13th August and some other detainees despite EU’s less awareness on the cause of their detention.

Be it named a pro-democracy rally or be it named a peaceful demonstration; it was in fact resorted to violence. The leaders of the August rally demanded the release of particular detainees including many convicted. Over time, the mob also demanded the resignation of the President and many other members of the cabinet. I wonder if the democratic principles support such minorities to overthrow a government elected by the majority of the people for the protection of both the majority and minority’s rights!

Although, EU yet remains ignorant and has from the very beginning overlooked the factual grounds and the information provided by the government of Maldives, it is not worthwhile to adhere to such unrestrained orders regardless of by whom it is being directed. As per the governmental authorities of the Maldives, and as far as we are concerned, the state of emergency was declared as provided by the constitution of the Maldives and aimed to restore public order and to demolish violence for the protection of the people and to give power to the county’s Constitution and Law.

However, the government has in numerous occasions clarified the concerning authorities its commitment to further democracy and to bring about constitutional reforms to the system as well as it has said that the state of emergency remains reviewed time to time and will be repealed within a reasonable time.

We are taken by surprise on EU’s desperate attention on Maldives. EU’s motives to assault the Maldives and its attempt to overrule the Constitutional decisions of the Maldivian government remains unknown despite the fact that EU has omitted other countries such as Egypt that has been governed under state of emergency since 1982 until this very moment! Why shall a credible decision made by the government of
Maldives be forced to undo just because a few are linked with some MPs of the European Parliament?

We believe, these unanswered questions diverts EU’s movement to many unpleasant assumptions which EU shall therefore be concerned and review its unjust, improper and premature approach to enforce economic restrictions on the Maldives at this very critical situation. EU shall further realize that the people of
Maldives or at least the majority would never stand in favor of EU’s current resolution even though a handful of dissidents are fully cooperative with EU to achieve their self-centered objectives which are derived from their greed for power and personal grudge.
