Introducing a Corruption Sticker: Bushry's idea
for the termination of corruption
21|06|2005| Think Tank
As usual, I
went on browsing internet websites that uncover the stories of
Maldives, the world famous paradise islands. I was taken by
surprise by the incredible
petition posed by Bushry-a famous columnist who has
freshly started contributing to a wonderful internet tabloid
called Dhivehi Observer-to get himself chopped and made into
fish meal.
It was all
about the 'unwanted' orange-colored sticker which gets stuck
on vehicles for prohibited parking. However, Bushry admits
that while rushing to lunch break, he parked his car in a
location where he should not but he had to. It's true that the
tiny island Male' the capital of Maldives is jammed with
vehicles where the drivers find it so hard to locate a parking
zone for their wheels.
It was the
orange-colored sticker that drove Bushry's anger to the
highway. According to him, his problem was not that he was
obliged to pay a penalty for his failure to conform to the
law. He was rather concerned about the government doing its
duties which he believes are of less importance.
In a
nutshell, what Bushry wanted uncover was that the government
hasn't taken proper measures to end up the widespread
corruption in the governmental bureaucracies while the
government is tirelessly chasing the ordinary man for peanuts,
and more specifically, sticking that 'bloody orange-colored
sticker' on their vehicles in the middle of a busy working
day. I can't agree more, but the unpleasantness arose from
Bushry's article was his failure to prevail his emotions
towards the 'bloody orange-colored sticker'. It is believed
that rebellious actions are not of the modern time. Thus, we
shall agree that tearing the 'bloody orange-colored sticker'
was not an answer nor was his excuse to park his car in the
wrong place is acceptable.
My question
is if everyone in the society is of Bushry's nature, what will
be next, and what will be the case if we all start taking the
law into our hands because the government fails to address
certain crimes in the society which every single person
believes are of more importance to be stopped than his/her few
steps neglecting the law?
Bushry said
'I don't give a damn whether I'm chopped into tiny bits and
made into fish meal, for expressing my disgust at the way that
certain authorities are treating the members of the general
public.'
This may
sound courageous to some. But to those who are wise and just,
the idea of expressing disgust at the 'bloody orange-colored
sticker' that gets stuck on the vehicles for the illegal usage
of public domain would be more disgusting and unacceptable.
This is for the clear reason that this sticker is aimed to
protect the right of every single individual who has equal
rights to enjoy the rights related to public domains.
Finally,
little did Bushry consider the masses who complain about the
cars, motorcycles and bicycles parked in front of their doors,
and many more pedestrians who complain about the lunch
break-parking zones?
Regrettably, I must say Busry's idea of addressing corruption
and his excuse to become unruly is truly disgusting.
