Over 100 Maldivian Students in Cairo are at
high financial crisis
05/04/2005-DP
has learnt that over 100 government-sponsored Maldivian
Students in Cairo, are at high risk of financial crisis.
According to several students, they are undergoing serious
monetary hardship due to the postponement of their monthly
pocket money since end of the month of March.
DP
has further learnt via an informal chat with a semi-formal
government official who is also a student in Cairo, that the
Department of Higher Education has informed of this delay and
that the Department apologizes for this unconditional delay of
student's monthly allowance. However, DP was not
informed of a proper reason for this deferment, but can
confirm that this nature of receiving the pocket money had
been quite often, and that the students are forced to face a
lot of problems due to financial scarcity.
Another
student said "the apartment owner rang my doorbell thrice, but
I had no choice other than ignoring him for the time being".
DP
believes that the Ministry of Education of the Maldives shall
be concerned over this serious issue, and that an apology
which only signifies the execution of formalities does not
truly serve to address this sort of incompetent performance by
the Department of Higher Education.
