Fight against drug abuse!

A call by a sixteen-year-old girl

Noora 11/04/2005-Drug addiction, a universally concerned issue is now becoming one of the top most ruining factors of our nation. The fact that a large part of our population, specially the youth being hugely hooked on the abusive consumption of drugs has made it an issue in to which we need to give relative practical importance. We need to find a way to save our future, by providing our youngsters with means to fight against this life threatening addiction.

There is a lot that can be done. First of all, ways to stop these drugs being brought in to our nation must be found. For this we need to establish a proper form of security both at sea and at the airports. No matter how supreme a person is, or how high his position within the world is, whoever comes into our nation need to pass through these security formalities. Everyone needs to understand that passing through these formalities does not mean that they are being regarded as someone who might turn out to be disloyal. It should simply be seen as a measure to maintain peace and prosperity within the nation.

People fighting for power and wealth will do anything to get what they want. There first target becomes the innocent teenagers of our nation. Teen age is a time in life when issues of independence and conflicting ideas rise among parents and their children. At a time like this when these teenagers feel let down at every point in life, and if a strong addictive drug becomes a peer supporter than there is little that can be done. To prevent this from happening parents need to support their children at this critical stage in life. It’s true that peer pressure plays a great role in what children do. But when it comes to moral issues children are strongly influenced by their parents. By involving children in proper conversations, giving them and their ideas a chance to prove themselves, and accepting their developing social skills will certainly give them the feeling of being generally accepted as someone important. At the same time rather than mandating rules on children, including them in discussions of some rules can help them in learning to work through problems and arrive at solution that may involve compromise. This will teach them to make the right decision in life, whatever obstacle that they come across.

Standing at high stage of development, relative importance is given to former education of all children. As a result every year more than 3000 students finish their ordinary level of education, and take a step further in to their future. The problem is that all those finishing school at this stage are not being given equal opportunities to move successfully in to their future. Unless one moves in to higher studies most of these students are left with nothing to do. They are not provided with enough opportunities, either at work or at studies and often remain idle. This undoubtedly pushes them in to wrong doings where they come across fascinating subjects as that of using drugs. Why not this be prevented by making sure that each and everyone leaving school  is being guided in to the right path either by giving them training to do something useful or by financially supporting them to achieve what they want in life. This will surely not be a great cost if it preserves today’s successful youth for tomorrow’s betterment.

Initial measures can be taken to prevent newcomers in to being drug addicts. But when it comes to those already engaged in this never ending torture, professional assistance should be given to help them move out of what they are going through. Medical and psychological support followed by proper rehabilitation is very important. Drug addiction is not as simple as it sounds, and can lead to a lot of social and economic problems if proper attention is not given in the early stages.

Even though rehabilitation is given to drug addicts to a certain extent in Maldives it is quite obvious that what is being done is not that effective. So the time has come for better techniques to be used in rehabilitating the drug addicts before the whole of our nation suffers the side effects of what these addicts are going through.

Using drugs is seen as an illegal act in Islam. It thereby is necessary for all wrongdoers to be punished for what they do. When a drug abuser is punished for what he has done it is indeed necessary that they serve their sentence or at least a major part of it. If they are being given freedom or even if there sentence is forgiven before they even have to face the consequences of what they had done then there is no hope of such acts declining in the future. So let all drug abusers be punished accordingly, for it is a hope in each and every mind to save there people from being wrongdoers.

Let us be one of those who reach out to give a helping hand, so that we can save our nation, our people and our future from being lost in the darkness of life. May God give us the power to fight against enemies as that of drugs so that we can save our loved ones, and guide them in to the right path.
