CAN THE
IRON BARS AND STRONG WALLS OF A CELL PREVENT “ MUAVIATHS”
DEATH?
Ahmed Asim 12/03/05 - We all pray for heaven, but none of us
wants to die. Though such is how we feel about death without
which heaven won’t be any closer, one day we all have to face
it. It comes in many forms at different places for different
people. One may die of his own fault or someone else’s fault.
If not for any of these two we call it a natural death.
You would have heard about Sulaiman Alaihissalam. Once in a
ball in his kingdom a young man in his early twenties felt so
bewildered for a person (Angel of death, Malakal Mauth) in the
ball was continuously gazing at him. So this young man
requested the king for him to be transferred to China.
Sulaiman AlaihissalAm ordered the wind to carry him in a blitz
to China. Minutes after the young man disappeared from the
ball, Malakal Mauth approached to the King and said in
astonishment that he is so confused to see a young gentleman
whose soul was to be taken while he was in China few minutes
from then was there in the ball. The King with a smile
grinned; god is great, he is now in China.
Death is certain, but the place of death is not. People have
traveled thousands of miles away from their homes and loved
ones, just to die without his/her knowledge. Think of the
Tsunami. Tourists who have never ever before been to this
region simply traveled a long way from home to the destination
of their deaths. This is a fact and nobody can prove it wrong.
The only time anybody can prove it wrong is when mankind finds
out means to stop death, which is impossible.
It is a time the whole Male’ is crowded with rumours of how
Muaviath died in the Dhoonidhoo Detention Unit. A guy who was
on the loose until 4th March 2005, died in the custody of the
Maldives Police on 10th March 2005, only after 6 days of
imprisonment. The rumours are so awkward that Dhoonidhoo is no
place to die. Death did not hault for Prophet Mohammed (say),
it even went through the world highest security zone up to the
ex-US president Ronald Ragon, so how can the iron bars and
strong walls of the Dhoonidhoo stop it from happening.
Evan Naseem died on 19th September 2003 in the Maafushi Jail.
What the rumours of today is that Muaviath is another Evan
Naseem. If it is so undoubtedly as the whole country knows the
culprits cannot escape the fair and justness of our legal
system. Those of who were involved in the unethical act of
beating Evan Naseem to death were all tried in the court
publicly and those eight convicted sentenced to death. So we
know that our legal system is that strong that a culprit
cannot find his way out after committing a crime. Where the
rumours of Muaviath’s death have gone very wrong is that it is
compared with the death of Evan Naseem.
Muaviath died of a natural cause, but mainly because of his
own carelessness. He has been a heavy doper for more than
eight years. He even smuggle illegal drugs into our community.
He has gone to the extremes of doping that he has made the
lives of his family members miserable. Stealing and destroying
their property is a common thing almost everyday. His weird
acts has so much escalated that he was apprehended while he
was chasing his mother with a knife in his hand. Things went
this far that his family members could no more tolerate his
behaviour that they reported the matter to the Maldives
Police. What else should the Police do other than apprehending
him? He cannot be let loose to destroy the property of his
family and willfully stab his mother to death.
Basically today our community is quite crowded with dopers,
but it is only very few parents who take appropriate actions.
Police to apprehend a criminal, by law has to catch the
criminal while or after committing the crime. If apprehended
before a crime is committed it is violation of human rights.
So without the cooperation of the parents it is impossible to
strain our community from the dopers.
Like Muaviath’s parents if all our parents are ready to inform
the Maldives Police if their children are going against the
law it will definitely clean our society from many crimes that
are a common thing today. Like Muaviath’s parents some few
other parents too has reported about their children before
things went out of hand and Maldives Police have brought them
under their watchful eyes. Some are stilling serving the
sentence and many have corrected their habits and are today
productive people in the society.
Muaviath was so gone to drugs that his body could not cope
anymore. He was pale and haggard at all times. He finds
difficulty to talk properly. During his last moments he was
shouting as in the last moment of Stalin. His cell mate was
awakened by the loud cry of Muaviath. His cell mate without
delay informed the guard and Muaviath was immediately removed
from the cell and taken to Male’ IGMH hospital. Muaviath died
before he reached the hospital. The doctors at IGMH inspected
him thoroughly guaranteed the statement for his natural death.
Though his death is natural, such an early death is of his
carelessness.
Parents out there, please be more concerned of your children’s
acts and take necessary measures. It is not only the Maldives
Police who can help you. If you find hesitant to come up to
Police, consult the NCB or any other non government
organization for help. Surely none of us will decline in
assisting you. But please, if your child becomes a menace to
your lives and others lives do please keep us informed.
Anything can be corrected before it’s too late. Sooner the
better, if not, things will be difficult and out of our hands
as with the case of Muaviath. “Trying to take lives and dying
in shame.”
