The
Maldives proclaimed its first written constitution on 22
December 1932, in the reign of Sultan Muhammad Shamsuddeen
Iskandhar III. Soon after the downfall of the reigning Sultan,
in 1937, a new Constitution was declared by Sultan Hassan
Nooraddin, and replaced it in order to suit the Constitution
with the practical conditions of the county at that very time.
However,
upon the proclamation of the first Republic, a new
Constitution was declared in 1953. After the quick downfall of
the first republic, the Constitution was emended to suit the
following monarchy, and the sultanate continued till 1968.
Later on, with the declaration of the second Republic, the
Constitution was revised and amended to suit the Republican
system.

Thereafter, the Constitution had been emended thrice, and the
last amendment took place during the presidency of Maumoon
Abdul Gayoom and was enforced on 01
January 1998.
After more
than a half decade of its continuous enforcement, due to the
emerging changes in the Maldives political environment,
President Gayoom has convened the Constitutional Assembly for
the second amendment during his presidency in late 2004.Ends
