Majlis Election Results - A Disaster for the
Colonialists
01|01|2006 |ADDUONLINE
Each political party in Maldives have their own way of assessing
election results and making false generalisations about the
society. The pro government camp claims that election results
indicate a ''huge swing'' for them despite the defeat while the
''anti'' arrogantly claim that its success is an indicator of
its popularity.
However the low voter turn out (less than 50%) in the recent
Majlis election results proved to be a total disaster for the
colonialists. Thus indicating that their planned designs have
not gained much momentum. Election is a mere process of any
ruling system. If Maldivians do not have confidence in the mere
processes of democracy what could be said about their stance on
actual substance of democracy emanating from secular creed. This
public apathy towards political processes instigated by the
colonialists is not going to warm hearts of the colonialists
because they do not want the debate on ''who is democratic'' to
revolve around political parties and few elites. They desire
that every layer of the society and its future to be shaped by
the on going struggle to prove which camp is more democratic. In
other words, the colonialists want the heart and minds of the
populace to be impacted by this debate such that they adopt
democracy and its rotten concepts as a basis for the political
discussions. So, what can the colonialists do if the local
populace remains divorced from politics and if the men folks are
more interested in English football proceedings whilst
womenfolks are more concerned about the tragic storyline of
kasauti, kusum,...etc ?
Conclusion
The election result is a slap on the face of the every political
party who claim they are the representatives of the people. If
numbers are so sacrosanct in democracy then this is a reminder
to each political party not to act arrogantly on behalf of the
people when 50+ percent of the population are not concerned
about their Machiavellian dealings. Yet the ''anti'' camp has
the audacity to have their congregation (called congress) and
even announce a shadow cabinet!
