The decision to allow Mr. Nasheed to attend the MDP Congress
displays the Government’s commitment to making multiparty

Male', December 21st, 2005 (Wednesday) - Chief Government
Spokesman, Mr. Mohamed Hussain Shareef today said that the
decision by the Government to allow Mr. Mohamed Nasheed,
Chairperson of the MDP to attend the MDP Congress was a gesture
of goodwill by the Government, to display its commitment to
making multiparty democracy work in the Maldives.
Following last night's conclusion of the MDP Congress held in
Male', Chief Government Spokesman Mohamed Hussain Shareef said:
“The decision to allow Mr. Nasheed, who is under house arrest by
judicial warrant, to attend the Congress is a sincere gesture on
the part of the Government, and it displays our commitment to
multiparty democracy and the wider reform programme."
"We are happy that the MDP has been able to hold their Congress
successfully, and congratulate those who were elected to
positions of responsibility. We sincerely hope that the
successful conclusion of the Congress will pave the way for a
more mature outlook by the MDP, and that they will now be able
to focus on carrying forward the reform process."
"We take this opportunity to call on all parties to collaborate
in advancing the reform agenda, and to focus on the interests of
the people and the nation, rather than on petty political
gains."
