Government

Type:

Republic: A representative democracy in which the people's elected deputies (representatives), not the people themselves, vote on legislation.
Administrative divisions:
20 Atolls: Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu, Baa, Dhaalu, Faafu, Gaafu Alifu, Gaafu Dhaalu, Gnaviyani, Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Kaafu, Laamu, Lhaviyani, Meemu, Noonu, Raa, Seenu, Shaviyani, Thaa, Vaavu.
Legal System: Shari'ah & Law: Based on Islamic law with admixtures of English common law primarily in commercial matters; has not accepted compulsory ICJ (International Court of Justice) jurisdiction.
Executive: Chief of State & the Cabinet of Ministers: Both, Chief of State and the Head of Government is the President, and the Cabinet of Ministers will be appointed by the president.
Legislature: People's Majlis: Unicameral People's Council of 50 seats in which two representatives are elected from every atoll, two representatives from the capital Male', and eight members appointed by the President.
Constitutional Assembly: People's Special Majlis: Consists of the People's Majlis, the Cabinet of Ministers, and two representatives elected from each atoll, tow representatives from the capital Male' and eight members appointed by the President.
Judiciary: High Court & the Courts of the Maldives: The High Court and the other courts of the Maldives independently deal with the judicial matters as stipulated in the Constitution.
