The
Republic of Maldives or Dhivehi Rajje' is a nation consisted
of an archipelago, located in the Indian Ocean.
Regardless
of historic revelations that indicate the existence of varied
religious beliefs among the Maldivian people, they embraced
Islam in 1153 AD, and since then, the people of Maldives are
spiritually combined with the bond of oneness in both their
belief and religion.
Dhivehi is the national language, officially recognized as
their mother tongue, and is written and spoken by the
Maldivian people regardless of its varied dialects. Both the
English and Arabic languages are used as mediums of
instruction in schools.
The Maldives was a British protectorate from 1667 to 1965, and
in the same year, she became a member of United Nations. Since
then, Maldives was governed by sultanate until the Republic
was replaced in 1953.The First Republic was declared by the
late His Excellency Mohammad Amin Dhoshimeyna Kilagefaanu, but
his presidency however, was short lived. Consequently, a
Constitutional Monarchy was reestablished with Sultan Mohammad
Farid on the throne. This monarchy was later again abolished
on 11th of November 1968, and His Excellency Ibrahim Nasir was
the president of the second republic.
Ibrahim Nasir's presidency also had lived a life of its own,
and was succeeded by the incumbent President Maumoon Addul
Gayoom who was elected and sworn in as president of the
Maldives on November 11, 1978, and until today, President
Gayoom is the president of the Maldives who is presently
serving the sixth five years-term in office of the President.
